We are a Unicef UK Rights Respecting School!
Cottesbrooke Infant & Nursery School aims to be a school where children’s rights are at the heart of our ethos and culture, to improve well-being and to develop every child’s talents and abilities to their full potential. As part of this plan we have recognition as a ‘Rights Respecting School’, an award given to schools on behalf of Unicef UK.
Unicef is the world’s leading organisation working for children and young people and their rights. In 1989, governments across the world agreed that all children have the same rights by adopting the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). These rights are based on what a child needs to survive, grow, participate and fulfil their potential.
Our pupils learn about their rights by putting them into practice every day. A Rights Respecting School models rights and respect in all its relationships. You will find information about the Rights we will be looking at in school. This is a summary document on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

We have achieved the Bronze Award!
We are delighted to announce that in March 2021 we were awarded the Bronze Award in Recognition of our Commitment by Unicef. This is the first part of the RRSA (Rights Respecting Schools Award) journey. We are now working on the Silver level, where we will work as a school to become aware of the rights of a child.
Launching Rights Respecting at Cottesbrooke Infant and Nursery School
On Wednesday 5th May 2021, we launched Rights Respecting in school. The children spent time looking at the difference between wants and needs. They discovered that needs are those things that enable them to live healthy, safe and fulfilled lives. This helped the children better understand how the rights of a child are based around needs and how this links with the UN Convention on the Rights of a Child.
In classes, the children discussed which articles they felt were important to their class and then designed posters for those articles. We looked at the people in our schools who Keep us Safe (our DSL's - Designated Safeguarding Leads) and how this links to Article 19 - Protection from violence, abuse and neglect.
In year groups, the children were split into teams. Each team then explored an article from the CRC in a fun way and then fed back this information in year group assemblies.
We all had great fun and look forward to continuing our RRS journey where we are now aiming for Silver!
Beginning to learn about our rights in school
In school we are beginning to understand our rights. At the start of every lesson our teachers share the articles that we are accessing through that particular lesson. We have also started displaying our rights around school. Here are our RRSA Ambassadors putting up posters around school, these help us learn about and understand what our rights are.
